New daily persistent headache (NDPH)
is type of headache that begins suddenly and persists continuously from its onset. Unlike other headache disorders that develop gradually or have periods of remission, NDPH starts abruptly and is often described as a constant, daily headache from the moment it first appears. This condition can mimic features of both tension-type headaches and migraines, causing a persistent dull ache or throbbing pain on one or both sides of the head. Despite its chronic nature, NDPH is not always associated with the same level of disability as other headache disorders but can be highly frustrating due to its unrelenting presence.
One of the key ways NDPH differs from migraine is its abrupt onset and continuous nature. While migraines are often episodic and characterized by specific phases, such as aura or nausea, NDPH remains constant without clear triggers or fluctuation in intensity. Unlike migraines, which may be triggered by stress, hormonal changes, or dietary factors, NDPH has no identifiable cause, although some patients report it begins after an illness, stressful event, or minor head injury. Migraines typically come with additional symptoms like light and sound sensitivity or visual disturbances, which are less common in NDPH.
NDPH can commonly be resistant to common headache treatments. Dr. Cohen is well experienced in treating those with NDPH, and knowledgeable in a wide variety of medications, lifestyle adjustments and procedures including:
Botox injections
Facial nerve blocks (trigeminal nerve)
Occipital nerve blocks
Trigger point injections
Sphenopalatine ganglion blocks
Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) monoclonal antibody injections
Neuromodulation
Ketamine (intra-nasal and infusion)
Lidocaine infusion
and more
