Trigeminal neuralgia
is a headache disorder that affects the trigeminal nerve (one of the largest nerves inside your head), which carries sensation from the face to the brain. Those with this disorder experience sudden, severe, and shock-like pain in the areas supplied by the trigeminal nerve, such as the cheeks, jaw, forehead, or around the eyes. The pain is often triggered by everyday activities like chewing, talking, or even light touches, making it a debilitating condition that significantly impacts daily life.
The pain episodes associated with trigeminal neuralgia are typically brief but intense, lasting anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. These attacks can occur in rapid succession or intermittently over several days or weeks. While the exact cause of trigeminal neuralgia can vary, it is often related to pressure on the nerve, usually from blood vessels or sometimes due to conditions like multiple sclerosis, but sometimes can be idiopathic.
Dr. Cohen is well experienced in treating trigeminal neuralgia with medications, lifestyle adjustments, and procedures including:
Botox injections
Trigeminal Nerve Blocks
